The Annual Cape Induction Dinner took place at Kelvin Grove in Cape Town on 28 August 2007. The topic of the guest speaker, Prof Cheryl de la Rey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, was "Scarce Skills: implications for training Engineers". The dinner was sponsored by the University of Cape Town. Two new Fellows, Prof Tshilidzi Marwala and Prof Hansie Knoetze, were inducted while Prof Mark Alexander, who could not attend the Induction Dinner last year, was introduced to the Fellows. |

The 2007 Gauteng Induction Dinner took place on 28 June in the Reception Hall of the Conference Centre of the University of Pretoria. The guest speaker was Dr Con Fauconnier, member of the Executive Committee of SAAE and CEO of Exxaro Resources Ltd, who sponsored the dinner. The title of Dr Fauconnier’s speech was “The contribution of the minerals industry to the future of South Africa”. (Available here) Fellows Willem Hofmeyr, David Hulbert, Danai Magugumela and Felix Ndlovu were inducted on this occasion. Fellows David Glasser and John Sampson, who were elected as members in 2006 but were unable to attend the 2006 Induction Dinner, were also inducted. New Fellows Johannes Knoetze and Tshilidzi Marwala were inducted during the 2007 Cape Induction Dinner which will took place on 28 August 2007 at Kelvin Grove Club in Cape Town |

FELLOW JAMES BARNARD IS HONOURED AGAINOn April 5 2007 the US National Water Research Institute announced that Fellow James Barnard (CV here) has been selected as the fourteenth recipient of the NWRI Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Water Science and Technology. He received the Clarke Prize (a $50,000 cheque and a gold medallion) at the Fourteenth Annual Clarke Prize Lecture and Award Ceremony on 12 July 2007 at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach, California. |
