General Manager: Market Development and Project Evaluation, Oriel Resources Plc and Consultant Mintek (part time).
  • Started career with Darling and Hodgeson and Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation in 1969 gaining experience in plant operation and the solution of associated problems.
  • Joined Mintek in 1975 and worked as Group Leader and Assistant Director before being Promoted to Director of the Pyrometallurgy Division in 1985 and to Vice-President: Technology Commercialization in 1989.
  • Was the General Manager Business Development and Technology Commercialisation at Mintek and the CEO of Mindev (Pty) Ltd. Mindev is the holding company for Mintek’s interests in commercial operations such as Mogale Alloys.
  • Managed a major programme of ferroalloy technology development work during the 1980’s and 1990’s that culminated in the successful commercial implementation of a 40 MVA DC plasma-arc technology for the direct smelting of ferrochromium from chromite ore fines.
  • Was Chairman of Mogale Alloys, one of the companies that currently operates this ferrochromium technology. This DC arc furnace technology has been successfully applied to a number of other projects including the production of a nickel-containing ferroalloy produced at the Mogale Alloy’s Plant and ilmentite smelting at two plants in South Africa and Cobalt smelting in Zambia.
  • Has received two gold medals from Mintek for outstanding achievements in technology transfer for his work in the area of Ferroalloys.
  • Past-President and Honorary Life Fellow of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), Chairman of The International Committee on Ferroalloys (ICFA) that is responsible for the awarding of INFACON to host countries. He has served on several academic advisory boards.
  • Joined Oriel Resources Plc in London in January 2006 following his retirement from Mintek. He still consults for Mintek on a part time basis.
