  • Joined Eskom in 1983 and after doing National Service at Mattek, CSIR in 1985, joined the Metallic Corrosion Group of Engineering Investigations of Eskom in 1986 and was appointed Head of the Corrosion and Non-metallic Group in 1987.
  • Was appointed Scientific Investigations Manager in 1989, Scientific Services Manager in 1991, Research Manager in 1993, Senior General Manager (Technology) and Managing Director TSI in 1999 and Executive Director (Resources & Strategy) in 2000.
  • Chairman South African Board for International Council of Scientific Unions, National Science & Technology Forum, Energy Sector Working Group of the National Research and Technology Foresight exercise, Power Institute of East and Southern Africa and International Chamber of Commerce.
  • Vice-Chairman – SA Scientific Committee for Climate Change..
  • Member – Council for the Environment (1993 – 1995), SA National Climate Change Committee (1994 – 1998), SA Delegation to Climate Change Negotiations – 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, Advisory Committee for National Research and Technology Audit, National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) and the Coal Industry Advisory Board of International Energy Agency.
  • Appointed Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce’s Environmental and Energy Commission and the Board of Trustees of the Fossil Fuel Foundation, Executive Committee member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and recently Board Member of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in the USA.
  • Fellow of the Royal Society.
  • Registered Natural Scientist
  • Lead reviews of national research and technology facilities and of National Research Foundation.
  • Panel member – South African system wide review panel (public science system).
  • Eskom Executive of the Year – 1997.
  • Director of Technology Services International (Pty) Ltd (non-executive) and of EDI Holdings (non-executive).
  • Trustee of National Innovation Fund and the Fossil Fuel Foundation.
  • Author of more than 60 local and international publications and is editor/contributor of “Global Climate Change and South Africa”, “Air Quality in South Africa” and “The Edge” series of books on technological innovation.
