• Started career with Ove Arup as engineer in training and worked between 1976 and 1980 consecutively as design engineer for Conder Construction (UK) and McKenzie Cairn and Bothma.
• 1980 to 1981 consulting engineer in company Allyson Lawless Inc. Founded Allyson Lawless (Pty) Ltd in 1981 and since then worked as Managing Director and developer of a range of low cost software for the structural and civil engineering profession.
• Runner up in both Small Business Woman of the year 1988 and Business Woman of the year 1989 competitions.
• Received the NU award, the E G Malherbe award for outstanding service in education, science and industry and the Silver award for SA Software Export. Past President of SAICE.
• Fellow of Institution of Structural Engineering (UK), founding member of NAWBO (National Association of Woman Business Owners), Consulting Member of the Institute of Municipal Engineers of SA and member of CIMESA.
• Serves on the Council of the University of Venda and in the tertiary education review initiative.
