• Prior to being appointed to the Chair of Structural Engineering at Wits, held the positions of Group Consulting Engineer at Dorman Long (Africa) and manufacturing manager of the Rolling Stock division of Dorbyl Limited. Served as Head of the Department of Civil Engineering for eight years and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for four years.
• Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand between 1994 and 1998 and Vice-Principal in 1997/1998.
• Main research interests are ultimate load analysis and design, ductility, steel and composite design and loading codes.
• Past President of the South African Institution of Civil Engineers. Published more than 80 papers in the field of structural engineering and has presented invited seminars at various universities in the USA and Europe.
