• Started career with D&H Construction (Pty) Ltd and worked for Vianini Pipes (Pty) Ltd and Fraser Fyfe (Pty) Ltd as Technical Engineer and Technical Manager respectively.
• Joined staff of University of Witwatersrand in 1989 as research fellow and was subsequently appointed Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, Professor and Head of the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
• Non-Executive Director of Fraser Fyfe (Pty) Ltd 1995-2000.
• Received SAICE’s award for the best paper by a graduate member in 1986, the PCI Research Fellowship 1989-1991, the Bram Fischer – Oxford University Fellowship Award – 2000 and was entered in the Financial Mail’s “Little Black Book”.
• Member of the Concrete Society of Southern Africa and full member of RILEM (France)
