• Obtained a scholarship for a two year graduate apprenticeship in the UK from The English Electric Company Ltd and remained in the UK for a third year specialised training in mining equipment.
• Joined The English Electric Co of South Africa (Pty) Ltd in 1959 as Erection Engineer and later as Contracts Engineer.
• Joined Consulting Engineering firm G H Marais & Partners in 1964 and became a partner in G H Marais & Partners in 1966 and Director in 1977 when the firm incorporated.
• Appointed Managing Director of G H Marais & Partners Inc in 1983 and Executive Chairman in 1990.
• Became Managing Director of the industrial division of Stewart Scott Inc and served on the Policy Board when the two firms amalgamated in 1997, until retirement in 1999.
• Elected council member of SAACE in 1975 and remained on council for 14 years. Served on the Executive and numerous other committees and was elected President of SAACE in 1983.
• Served for 4 years on the FIDIC International Electrical committee.
