• Subsequent to teaching Mathematics, worked for the University of the Western Cape, B.S.Bergman (consulting engineers) and Clifford Harris (civil engineering contractors).
• Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the Peninsula Technikon for five years. Played a key role in shaping the new higher education system in South Africa. Appointed to the National Commission on Higher Education in 1995. Played a decisive role in restructuring higher education in South Africa and currently serves on the Council for Higher Education, the national body advising the Minister.
• Served as Vice-President of the Engineering Council of South Africa from 1991 to 1995
