- Started with Anglo American Corporation in 1969 and held various positions including underground manager at various collieries. Joined Gencor Limited in 1978 and served as Senior Manager Technical Services and General Manager Usutu Collieries Ltd.
- Moved to JCI Limited in 1987 and was appointed Chief Executive Coal and Base Metals.
- Appointed General Manager Business Development at Iscor in 1995, Deputy Managing Director of Iscor Mining in 1997 and Managing Director in 1999. Became Chief Executive of Kumba Resources Limited in 2001 where he was responsible for the unbundling of the mining assets of Iscor from the steel assets to create and list the new company, Kumba Resources Ltd, which subsequently became one of the largest and most successful diversified mining companies in South Africa. Became Chief Executive Officer of Exxaro Resources Limited, the company formed in November 2006 by the merger between Eyesizwe Coal and the non-iron ore assets of Kumba Resources.
- Won the SAIMM Student Prize for dissertation entitled “Refrigeration in Mines” in 1969 and the SA Colliery Managers Association Prize in 1978, 1979 and 1980 and the Silver Medal of the SAIMM in 1987 for papers on the control of underground fires in collieries in South Africa.
- Received an honorary doctorate in natural science from the University of the Free State in 2004.
- Received the Boss of the Year Award in 2004.
- Fellow of the Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa, the South African Institute of Mining & Metallurgy and the Institute of Directors.
- Former member of the Advisory Boards of both the Faculty of Engineering Built Environment and Information Technology and the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Pretoria.
- Former member of the Executive Council and President of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa for the period 2003-2005.
- Member of the Advisory Board of the University of Stellenbosch Business School.
- Author of 25 publications, some of which formed the basis of the principles applied in the control of underground fires in collieries in South Africa today.
