• Worked as graduate engineer with Christiani & Nielsen from 1973 to 1974.
• Post-graduate studies at University of Cape Town from 1975 tot 1977. Worked as Research Officer, Chief Research Officer and Principal Research Officer at the University of Cape Town between 1978 and 1992. Was appointed Professor in 1991.
• Member of the International Association for Water Quality, Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa, Senior Fellow of the Water Institute of Southern Africa, Member of the Water Environment Federation of the USA, Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and Fellow of the University of Cape Town. Received WISA’s Umgeni Award for the most significant paper in water in South Africa in 1992 and with co-authors in 1993 as well as WISA’s Piet Vosloo Memorial prize in 1997 for development of mathematical models for biological wastewater treatment plant design.
• Author and co-author of more than 100 published journal articles on water and wastewater treatment.
