- Town Engineer of Bellville from 1946 to 1960.
- Followed postgraduate course in Town Planning at Delft Hogeschool in 1956 and the Advanced Management Programme of Harvard Business School (held in Swansea) in 1975.
- Joined IDC in Johannesburg in 1961 and was involved in industrial estates, services and buildings, the Kunene hydro power station in Namibia, the manufacture of silicon chips, Atlantis diesel engines and industrial financing and development in general.
- Managing Director of the IDC from 1981 to 1985.
- Deputy Chairman of the State President’s Economic Advisory Council from 1989 to 1990.
- Awarded the MS Louw Trophy of the Afrikaanse Handelsintituut, the State President’s Decoration for Meritorious Service (Gold), the Frans du Toit medal for business leadership and honorary doctorates by Potchefstroom University, RAU, University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University.
- Honorary Fellow of the SA Institute of Industrial Engineers, Patron of
- Technology 100 and Member of the SA Academy for Science and Art.
- Director of SASOL, BMW (SA), SA Reserve Bank and the Hans Merensky Foundation.
