• Designer and Resident Engineer with Van Wyk & Louw Ing from 1985 to 1988.
• Design Engineer with White Young Consulting Engineers in Leeds, England from 1988 to 1989 and with Van Wyk & Louw Ing from 1989 to 1990.
• Appointed by the University of Pretoria in 1990 as lecturer, became Associate Professor in 2001 and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering in 2007.
• Established the concrete materials research laboratory at the University of Pretoria.
• Member of the South African Concrete society, Senior member of RILEM (The International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures), Member of the Coal Ash Association of South Africa.
• Member of the panel that interviews engineers to evaluate foreign civil engineering qualifications (not covered by the Washington accord) for ECSA, Chairperson of SAICE Editorial Panel (2003 – 2009) that is responsible for the PICA award winning monthly magazine “Civil Engineering”, Member of the Advisory Panel for CSIR Built Environment 2009 and alternating Member of the NSTF Adjudication Panel for the Scientist of the Year Awards (2004 – 2008).
• President of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (2009) and Council Member of the Engineering Council of South Africa (2005 – 2009),.
• NRF-rated Researcher and received the 2008 THRIP Technology Award for Research collaboration.
