  • Programme Manager at CSIR from 1985 to 1990.
  • Deputy Director of CatUnit at UCT from 1990 to 1994.
  • Director R & D at Süd-Chemie AG (Germany) from 1994 to 1999.
  • Director of UCT CatUnit from 1999 to 2005 and Director of DST–NRF Centre of Excellence in Catalysis ( c*change) from 2004 to 2007.
  • Director of UCT CatCentre since 2005 and Director of HySA/catalysis since 2007 and Head of Department of Chemical Engineering since 2008.
  • Initiated c*change in 2004 as a new approach to academic research on a national level which by design operates as a multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary, integrated team to achieve a limited number of technical outcomes of substantial importance to South Africa.
  • Transformed the UCT CatCentre over the past ten years from a typical university-based academic grouping into a national capability for heterogeneous catalysis research and development incorporating both fundamental academic studies of internatioal excellence as well as practical empirical programmes of industrial significance to South Africa and the Continent.
  • Member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and past Chairman, Committee Member, Secretary/Treasurer and Newsletter Editor of the Catalysis Society of South Africa.
  • Was a qualifier in 2002 for the award for the Best Technology Development Project by the Department of Trade and Industry/Thrip and received their award for Best Industry Collaboration Project in 2006. Was Lead Director National Hydrogen Catalysis Competence Centre in 2007 and Lead Director National Centre for Excellence in Catalysis in 2004.
