• Worked as Engineer for Van Niekerk, Kleyn & Edwards Consulting Engineers in Windhoek from 1975 to 1977.
• Appointed by the University of Stellenbosch as Research Assistant in 1978, Lecturer in Structural Engineering in 1979, Senior Lecturer in 1981 and Professor in 1991.
• Established the Centre for the Development of Steel Structures (CDSS) within the Institute of Structural Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch for resarch and post-graduate training of structural engineers in all aspects of steel construction.
• Chairman of the SABS Technical Committee on “Basis of structural design and actions on structures” and member of the SAICE Working Group responsible for the revision of the SANS 10160 Code of Practice.
• Implemented the civil engineering subject “Civil Engineering Informatics” at undergraduate and postgraduate level at the Department of Civil Engineering at Stellenbosch University based on the German approach of “Bauinformatik” in collaboration with the Technical University Berlin and the Bauhaus Universität, Weimar.
• Honorary Member of the South African Institute of Steel Construction.
