  • Started career in 1984 as Assistant Process Engineer with Sasol.
  • Did military service as Chemical Engineer in Naval Dockyard in Durban in 1985.
  • Returned to Sasol as Process Engineer before joining Somchem as Engineer in 1988.
  • Worked as private consultant chemical engineer from 1991 to 1992.
  • Appointed Senior Researcher at University of Stellenbosch in 1992, Senior Lecturer in 1994, Associate Professor in 1996 and Professor in 1999.
  • Founding Director of the Anglo Platinum Centre for Process Monitoring at the University of Stellenbosch, referee for more than 30 different international academic journals, member of editorial boards of various international journals, supervisor or co-supervisor for ten PhD and 33 Master students.
  • Member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Member of the executive Committee of the South African Council for Automation and Control (SACAC).
  • Received the President’s Award of the Foundation of Research and Development in South Africa for international recognition of research in 1995, was Researcher of the Year, Faculty of Engineering, University of Stellenbosch in 1995, received the Silver Medal of the South African Insitute of Mining and Metallurgy for a paper published in Transactions of the SAIMM in 1999, the British Association (S2A3) Silver Medal in 2000 and listed in 2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 21st Century, 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century, The Cambridge Blue Book (2007) and the Cambridge Blue Book of Foremost International Scientists (2008).
  • Author and co-author of more than 100 papers in peer reviewed journals as well as chapters in books and contributions to refereed conference proceedings.
