  • Appointed at Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg) in 1978 and worked consecutively as Laboratory Assistant, Research Assistant, Process Engineer, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer and was appointed Associate Professor in 1990 and Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1996.
  • Visiting Engineer at MIT, USA in 1990 and Visiting Professor at University of Alberta, Canada in 1996.
  • Chairperson, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at RAU from 2000 to 2003.
  • Appointed as Professor and holder of De Beers Chair of Electronics at University of the Witwatersrand in 2003, Deputy Dean in 2005, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment in 2007. Member of the Council of Wits.
  • Received SAMES post-graduate student award in 1984, co-recipient of best paper award, International Conference on Electronic Materials, European Materials Research Society, Strasbourg June 1992, SAIEE President’s Award in 1994, Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Bursary for Research in 1996, Award of Excellence in Research by the South African Association for Woman Graduates, Best Lecturer Award in Faculty of Engineering, RAU and an ECSA Merit Certificate in 2005. Honorary member of Golden Key.
  • Council member of ECSA and serves on various ECSA committees, member of the Engineering Standards Generating Body, Council member of the SAIEE, President of SAIEE 2005/2006, Editor in Chief, SAIEE Africa Research Journal since 2006, Senior Member of IEEE since 2001, Member of SA National Committee of URSI & Commission D since 2000, Member NRF Advisory Committee for Cape Technikon up to 2005, Member and Steering Committee member of the National Photonics Initiative since 2007 and Member of the CBE Built Environment Skills Supply Task Team.
  • Authored and co-authored more than 150 peer reviewed journal papers and conference contributions.
