- Started his career in 1986 at Mintek as Engineer-in-training and progressed to Group Leader in 1994.
- Appointed Professor and Group Head in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at the the University of Pretoria in 1995.
- Editor-in-Chief of “Control Engineering Practice” since July 2005.
- Council member of the International Federation of Automatic Control, Past President of the South African Council for Automation and Computation, Past President and founder of the M.I.T. club of South Africa, and past Council member of the SAIEE.
- Current and past member of 17 international programme committees, including vice-chair of the IPC for the 12th IFAC Symposium on Automation in Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing, Quebec City, Canada, August 2007.
- Received the Dean's prize for most outstanding final year student in Electronic Engineering in 1985, Mintek's silver medal for application of process control to milling in 1992, and the academic achiever of excellence award form the University of Pretoria in 2002.
- Author/co-author of 2 books, 35 journal articles, 51 conference articles, 40 technical reports, and 1 multi-media CD-ROM. Sixteen postgraduate students have completed their Masters or PhD degrees under his supervision/co-supervision
