• Started career with Johannesburg City Engineer’s Department as Junior Design Engineer in 1973, was promoted to Resident Engineer in 1975 and Water Planning Engineer in 1977.
• Appointed Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1979 and was later appointed Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor.
• Appointed Professor at the University of Cape Town in 1992.
• Was President of the Concrete Society of Southern Africa in 1995, Team Leader of various ECSA Accreditation Teams, Bureau Member of RILEM, Member and Chair of various RILEM Technical Committees and Chairman of the Conference and of Int. Sci. & Organising Committees of the International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting in Cape Town in November 2005. Member of the Review Board of the International Journal of Cement and Concrete Composites and reviewer for various local and international journals.
• Author of several publications on the durability of concrete and supervisor of 26 Masters and eight PhD theses.
