- Completed BSc (Chemistry, Microbiology) degree in 1983 at UCT after receiving Twamley Undergaduate Scholarship for the most outstanding performance at the end of first study year in 1981, the AECI Chemistry Scholarship in 1982 and the Roderick Noble Scholarhsip for the best graduate achieving the highest grades in 1983.
- Obtained BSc Honours in 1984 at UCT and was awarded SA College Croll Scholarship for best graduate with first class Honours or Masters degree with distinction.
- Worked as Research Scientist at AECI R&DD at Modderfontein from 1985 to 1987.
- Awarded a Trinity College External Research Studentship, the United Kingdom Overseas Research Studentship and the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Scholarship in 1987 to study at Trinity College, Cambridge, UK and obtained PhD (Chemical Engineering) in 1990 at Trinity College.
- Pursued research in Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge in 1990 as Rouse Ball postdoctoral fellow.
- Appointed Senior Lecturer in Department Chemical Engineering at UCT in 1991, Associate Professor in 1997, Professor in 2001 and was Head of the Department from 1998 to 2002.
- Visiting scientist at Department Chemical Engineering, MIT, USA in 1997.
- Senior Zeneca Fellow at Department of Chemical Engineering and Visiting Fellow Commoner at Trinity College, Cambridge, UK in 2004.
- Author and co-author of numerous publications on bioprocess technology.
- Founder member of Cape Biotech Initiative which provided a foundation from which to form the DST-funded biotechnology regional innovation centre (BRIC), the Cape Biotech Trust.
- Contributed significantly to train the human capacity required to establish a biotechnology industry of significance in South Africa.
- Promoted collaboration across life science and engineering disciplines in research and education.
