• Started career with SA Railways as pupil engineer and was later promoted to Assistant Engineer.
• Worked for Ninham Shand Consulting Engineering from 1950 to 1991 as Engineer, Associate, Partner and Director.
• Deputy Chief Engineer, International Orange River Consultants Co. (consulting consortium to DWA for Gariep and Vanderkloof dams) 1963-1972. Chairman, SVE Consultants (consulting consortium to Eskom for Palmiet Pumped Storage Scheme) 1978 –1982.
• Chairman, Lesotho Highlands Consultants (consulting consortium to Lesotho Highlands Development Authority for Katse Dam and Transfer Tunnel) 1986 – 1996.
• Secretary of the Western Cape Branch of SAICE and Chairman of the Water Engineering Committee of SAICE.
• Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and member of the Institute of Civil Engineers, London, and the International Society of Rock Mechanics.
