  • Started career as Assistant Engineer with Sir William Halcrows & Partners working on soft ground tunnelling projects in London from 1959 to 1963.
  • Worked from 1963 to 1971 as Assistant Engineer and later Engineer for Orange-Fish Tunnel Consultants on the 83 km long Orange-Fish Tunnel.
  • Joined Keeve Steyn & Partners in 1971 as Engineer becoming an Associate and later Director.
  • Seconded to Lesotho Highlands Consultants from 1989 to 2000 as leader for the design and site supervision of the 45 km transfer tunnel.
  • Worked from 1999 to 2000 for the Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation as Tunnel Engineer for 7 km of twin tube road tunnels on the Xiatang-Gantang Expressway in Guangdong Province, China.
  • Joined Electrowatt Engineering in 2000 and was seconded to the International Railway Engineering Group as Senior Audit Engineer (Tunnels) and subsequently Deputy Construction Audit Manager on the 345 km long Taiwan High Speed Railway project.
  • Appointed Senior Associate in 2003 and later Director of Arcus Gibb. Seconded to Braamhoek Consultants Joint Venture as leader of the underground works design team for the 1332 MW Braamhoek Pumped Storage Scheme (2004 – 2006).
  • Member of Gauteng Province’s support team managing the development of the Gautrain Rapid Rail Project. Involvement includes providing specialist input on tunnelling and associated underground works
  • Member of the British Tunnelling Society and the International Society of Rock Mechanics.
  • Awarded prize for best short paper displaying evidence of ingenuity by SAICE in 1974 and as co-author, SANCOT’s award for the best paper on underground construction in SA in 1990.
  • Author/co-author of nineteen publications relating to the planning, design and construction of tunnels.
