Joined Anglo American Corporation in 1962 and was appointed section manager of Western Deep Levels in 1967.
• Joined Murray & Roberts in 1970 and was appointed manager, RUC Mining Contracting Company (Pty) Limited.
• Appointed managing director of RUC Mining Contracting Company (Pty) Limited in 1974.
• Became Chief Executive of Murray & Roberts Industrial in 1983, Chief Operating Officer of Murray & Roberts Holdings Limited in 1984 and Chief Executive of the Murray & Roberts Group in 1986.
• Appointed Chairman of Murray & Roberts Holdings Limited in 1993.
• Chairman of ABSA from 1 November 1993 – 1 November 1997.
• Appointed Chief Executive of Sankorp Limited, Director of Sanlam in 1994. Nominated one of the top five businessmen of the year (Sunday Times) 1991, was IMM Marketing Person of the Year in 1992, awarded Wits Business School Business Excellence Award in 1994, Engineer of the year in 1995 and Harvard Business School Statesman of the Year in 1996.
