• Started career as civil engineer at Kempton Park Municipality.
• Appointed as Marketing Director of Darling and Hodgson Materials in 1982, promoted to General Manager, Ready Mix Materials, Western Cape in 1985 and Regional Director, Southern Region in 1989.
• Appointed Managing Director of Blue Circle Cement in 1990 and Chief Executive of Darling and Hodgson in 1992.
• Appointed Chief Executive Officer of Murray and Roberts Materials Operating Group in 1995 and Chief Executive Officer of Aveng Ltd in 1998.
• Was responsible for leading the evolution of Aveng from a fixed investment conglomerate in the Anglovaal group to being a focused construction, steel and cement group operating across 30 countries in the developing world.
• President of the South African Institute of Quarrying (1991/1992) and President of the Steel and Engineering Federation of South Africa (2001/2002).
• Appointed by the Minister of Public Works to the Construction Industry Development Board for period 2001 - 2004.
